The Cameroon Works! Foundation has been selected in the end-of-year gift list for employees of the HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht (HU). HU staff and student board members can donate (part of) their end-of-year gift to charity.
The proceeds of the donations for the Cameroon Works! Foundation will be used to purchase a piece of land for a nursery in The Gambia. In collaboration with The Tree Party , we want to support Green World Activist Foundation (GWAF) in The Gambia in this way.
Green World Activist Foundation (GWAF). GWAF is a local foundation in The Gambia that fights climate change and reduces hunger through education, social engagement and planting edible trees.
With its own nursery, the foundation can operate independently and is less dependent on external financing for the purchase of seedlings. They will plant and grow (fruit) trees according to permaculture principles (organic farming). It can give an economic boost by creating employment (for women). Finally, it can also serve as an educational model to increase climate awareness among people and schools who visit the site.
The Gambia is among the most vulnerable countries to climate change due to its low-lying landscape and tropical climate. The country therefore has no choice but to play a modest pioneering role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050. This is to protect the lives and livelihoods of its inhabitants while contributing to global efforts to curb climate change. Climate change affects The Gambia in several ways: coastal erosion, youth unemployment, food insecurity, floods and droughts.
